JOB TITLE: Vocational Trainer

REPORTS TO: Coordinator- Transition & Special Populations

WAGE: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: Para 4

PRIMARY PURPOSE:

The job of Special Education Job/Vocational Coach was established for the purpose of providing support to the instructional program with specific responsibilities for supporting work experience opportunities for students who receive special education services by serving as a partner/liaison with community businesses and organizations, by developing pre-employment and employment skills, through providing information and/or direction to students, and by promoting programs with staff and parents.

The work of the Special Education Job/Vocational Trainer Aide will be guided by the district's curriculum, student's Individual Education Plan (IEP), federal, state and district policy and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required:

  • High School diploma or GED from an accredited institution
  • 48 hours of college coursework
  • Prior job related, and teaching students with special needs experience
  • CPR/AED/Physicals/Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (or willing to obtain within six weeks after hire date)
  • Valid CDL (or willing to obtain CDL within six weeks after hire date)
Preferred:
  • Have obtained an associate's (or higher) degree from an accredited college or university
  • Valid Texas teacher certification
  • Special Education certification
SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:
  • Assists coordinator- transition & special population, teachers and related staff for the purpose of supporting vocational goals and for developing students' vocational skills.
  • Collects proper documentation for the purpose of meeting the required items for program participation and/or parent/guardian approval.
  • Coordinates employer and school partners for the purpose of meeting the work education objectives.
  • Counsels students in job search skills for the purpose of informing them of employment and career options.
  • Maintains a variety of confidential and non-confidential manual and electronic lists and records for the purpose of documenting activities and/or providing reliable information.
  • Monitors student performance in a variety of work sites according to program guidelines for the purpose of identifying areas requiring additional training on techniques and methods for maintaining solid work habits.
  • Monitors student's job locations for the purpose of ensuring compliance with pertinent child labor laws, insurance guidelines, and safety.
  • Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops, and committees for the purpose of ensuring compliance with child labor laws, insurance guidelines, and safety.
  • Prepares a variety of documents, reports, and written materials for the purpose of communicating information to parents and staff, providing written support, developing recommendations and/or conveying information.
  • Responds to inquiries from a variety of internal and external sources for the purpose of providing information and/or direction as may be required.
  • Transports students, using a district vehicle (bus), obtains and maintains all certifications and licenses for a CDL for the purpose of assisting them in preparing for testing, interviews, and obtaining documentation to meet program objectives.
  • Train, monitor, teach, and coach students in vocational skills for the purposes of obtaining, increasing, and maintaining the student's readiness for employment and a job.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
  • The Vocational Trainers/Job Coaches perform the following duties:
    • Transport students as directed to job/training sites.
    • Escort and monitoring students when necessary between bus and class/job site (lunches break, special activities).
    • Follow the instructional procedures of the vocational teacher by assisting students individually with job skills.
    • Keep attendance records and data collection for grading.
    • Follow-up as on-site district representative with work site personnel as directed by vocational teacher.
    • Assist classroom teacher and/or vocational teacher in implementation of the individual behavior management plan of each student.
    • Maintain all rules and regulations concerning confidentiality of student, parent, and teacher information.
    • Adheres to schedules, deadlines, and procedures as directed by teachers.
    • Report to the special education Coordinator, or Supervisor any problems of conflicting expectations, directives, or interpretations by teachers.
    • Relay regularly to teachers any unusual circumstances or actions taken.
    • Be willing to assist in peak activity times as directed by the leaders.
    • Other duties as assigned

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meeting changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: applying and interpreting assessments instruments; operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percent's, and/or ratios; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of a job include: safe practices in work sites and other activities; correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation and vocabulary; record keeping techniques; modern office practices and procedures; pertinent district/federal/state labor laws and/or program requirements.

ABILITY is required to schedule a number of activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to independently work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with a variety of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality, working as part of a team; meeting deadlines and schedules.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require physical demands: some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 40% sitting, 20% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed inside, outside, under some temperatures in schools, jobsites, buses, and district buildings.
