The San Francisco Zoological Society is a non-profit institution that manages and raises funds for San Francisco Zoo and Gardens. The Society’s mission is to connect visitors with wildlife so that they care about nature and ultimately conserve it. SUMMARY : The Society employs animal care professionals, including animal keepers, to care for animals at the Zoo. An Animal Keeper has responsibility for the care, welfare, and safety of an animal(s) and the animal’s habitat or exhibit. ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES : An Animal Keeper performs all aspects of animal care, including upkeep of exhibits and adjacent areas, minor and emergency repairs to exhibits, designing and building displays and exhibit changes, conducting tours, public speaking, and coordinating volunteers. Cleans and maintains enclosures, cages, stalls, moats, barns, pools, yards, roads, and related areas. Observes behavior of animals, notes any unusual behavior, signs of illness or injury, and reports to supervisor or animal management team. Answers questions and gives information regarding animals, Zoo operations, and Zoo exhibits to the visiting public. Assists in the crating and uncrating of animals, catches and restrains as necessary, and may assist in transfer between locations. Designs and builds displays within existing enclosures and assists with planning and care of landscaped areas. Interacts with Zoo visitors and staff courteously and offers proper attention at all times. Drives vehicles on or off Zoo grounds and possesses knowledge of an animal’s dietary needs. Collaborates with other Zoo departments to maintain the highest level of animal care. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS : High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one-year paid experience working with ranch, farm, or exotic animals. DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS : The Society encourages bilingual candidates to apply. EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE requirements include a degree from an institution offering specialized animal management programs or an internship working with animals. CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS : A valid Driver’s License is required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS include standing, walking, reaching, talking, and hearing, with occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling.
